Campaign for Real Recycling Welcomes Defra Investigation into Recycling Quality
Today the CRR welcomed the advent of the Waste and Resources Evidence Strategy 2007-2011.
Andy Moore, CRR coordinator, commented: “We congratulate Defra on this new strategy. All the areas mentioned merit study. We are particularly interested in the approach to counting carbon impacts and in collection methods leading to high quality recyclate. We are pleased Defra is choosing to look at these and hope this work will address the campaign’s priorities. CRR stakeholders offer Defra any practical support as may be useful.
“As to whether high collection costs are offset by environmental benefits, we are increasingly convinced that there no real question to answer here of offsetting. As demonstrated in the recent Welsh Assembly Government study, financial efficiency and material quality result hand in hand from a source-separated approach.”
Notes for Editors:
The Campaign for Real Recycling wants central government and local authorities to act urgently to improve the quality of materials collected for recycling in the UK. Real recycling is about maximising the economic, environmental and social benefits of recycling for everyone, from the local council tax payer to the global re-processing industry. Our concern is that collection systems that gather a range of different materials in one bag or bin and then compact them could permanently undermine the environmental and financial benefits of recycling. Our campaign aims to influence local authority policy and practice, and build consensus within the UK of the economic and environmental importance of highly separated collections.
